The Shepheard’s Hotel, later that same day, 13 July 1896

“Do you mind if I lie down for an hour or so? I think the heat is getting to me?” I ask Catherine as we descend from the carriage in front of Shepheard’s Hotel.

“Not at all, Immy. I just hope Eddy and I weren’t neglecting you at the Pyramids. I hadn’t realized how much I’d missed him. He’s a dear, dear friend.”

“Oh no,” I reply. “I’m glad you were able to catch up with a friend and I’ve seen quite enough sarcophaguses for a while. Will Sir Edmund be going back to England soon?”

I don’t miss seeing Catherine’s face cloud over. “Yes, Eddy’s due to return to England at the end of this week. He’s been here for a couple of months, but the British Museum wants him back.”

I can’t help myself. She looks so stricken. “And did he have any news on your other friend, the one you refer to as C?”

Now guilt creeps over my cousin’s face and with a deep sigh, she replies, “Eddy did, in fact. He confirmed that C is in Egypt, but Eddy hasn’t been able to get hold of him. I’m afraid, Immy, that something has happened to him.”

“But why?” I ask, while we enter the hotel’s foyer and make our way up to our rooms.

“It’s not like C to ignore Eddy nor me.”

“But how do you know then that he is still in Egypt?”

“Because the British Museum sent him, that’s why. C’s here to replace Sir Edmund.”

“I see. Well, I hope he shows up in good health soon and your worries were for nought,” I say as I open the door to my rooms and let Jasper slip in. “Shall we meet up for dinner, then?”

Catherine nods.
